The Sons of St. Stephen is community resource made up of deacons serving each other and the larger community. Given birth at a MOSES workshop in March, 2017, it was clear that there was a need for us to work together to support each other – through sharing our faith, skills, knowledge and collective experience.
In our conversations, we discussed how deacons can feel like they are on an island, isolated from the close network of classmates that supported them throughout the formation period. There are many factors that contribute to this perception including geography and the demands of work, family, ministry, etc.
Collectively, we realized that there was much about the life, role and mission of a deacon that could not be covered during our formation process. Beyond this… the world is changing: issues, expectations, and the ever-evolving challenges that face us daily. This is the reality that RC Deacons are facing. If we try to go it alone, we cut ourselves off from the vast resource that is the rest of the Diaconate Community. It is a formula for frustration and falling short of the ministerial excellence to which we are called, and have committed ourselves, to deliver.
This is no one’s fault, but that does not change the fact that many basic and advanced needs exist. Thus, this informal but vibrant ministry was formed to make the Community a resource to itself. In this way, we can support each other to:
- Grow personally and spiritually
- Facilitate communication and collaboration
- Enhance current skills
In short, we seek to expand the scope and impact of the Community by creating awareness of the shared competencies of its members.
